PWR Courses: An Overview
PWR 1 (4 units) focuses on elements of academic
analysis and research-based argument. Students craft clear argumentative
theses; discover, develop, and deploy cogent proofs; make appropriate
organizational and stylistic choices; and take into account the
expectations of a wide range of audiences. The major project
of the course is the research-based argument, which includes
identifying, evaluating, and integrating a full range of sources
and documenting all sources meticulously.
PWR 2 (4 units) continues to emphasize analysis
and research-based argument with greater emphasis on the delivery
of sophisticated oral and multimedia presentations. The research
project is the centerpiece of the course, beginning with a research
proposal, then moving on to a substantial written argument which
is then delivered in an oral presentation with appropriate multimedia
support. Alternatively, students might deliver their research
in a website or an audio essay and give a live presentation explaining
the process of translation. Students work individually with their
instructor and with Oral Communication Tutors to rehearse and
revise their presentations.
PWR 4 (3-4 units) is a course in expository
and research-based writing available to advanced undergraduates
who wish to continue concentrating on the development of their
writing. The class meets once a week as a group, and instructors
meet regularly with each student. Prerequisite: completion of
PWR 1 and PWR 2
PWR 5 (1-5 units) is an independent writing
course for students who have completed PWR 1 and PWR 2 and wish
to work on a specialized writing project with the guidance of
a PWR instructor. Prerequisite: permission of instructor.
PWR 191 (3 units) is an advanced writing
course offering students experience in the genre of creative
nonfiction.
PWR 195 (3 units) is the Peer Writing Tutor
Seminar, offered each spring. Undergraduates apply for Peer Writing
Tutor positions during the Winter Quarter; those accepted into
the program complete this course on tutoring theory and practice
and begin to tutor the following fall.
PWR 198 (also EDU 198) (3 units) is Tutoring
in Middle and High School, a seminar that prepares undergraduates
to participate in Ravenswood Writes, a tutoring program for students
in several local high schools.
