Required Syllabus Information

All PWR syllabi include two major sections: 1) several pages of information describing course requirements, policies, and assignments as well as a list of student resources; and 2) a detailed schedule of writing assignments, reading assignments, and other class activities. The required information includes the following material:

  • Course identification (PWR course number, section number, and title)
  • Information about the course (meeting times and days as well as location)
  • Information about the instructor (your name, office location, phone number, email address or URL, and office hours)
  • The PWR Goals and Principles Statement
  • The course description as approved by the Associate Director and posted on the web
  • A list of course texts
  • Course requirements, with summaries for each major writing assignment
  • Evaluation procedures based on the PWR Evaluation Criteria
  • Format requirements for written work (information on margins, spacing, titles, staples or clips, page numbers, font size, justification, and print quality)
  • Format requirements for electronic submissions (subject heading, length, acceptable software for attachments)
  • Procedure for submission of assignments (whether in class, by email, via website, or PWR mailbox)
  • Class policies (attendance/promptness)
  • Due dates and any late work policy
  • Policy on 3 required conferences
  • Program and University policies (on the Honor Code, intellectual property, disability resources, and more)
  • Student resources

Much of this material is available on the PWR website and can be cut and pasted into your syllabus. If you wish, the Program will provide you with copies of the PWR Policies handout for your students. Please request copies of the handout from Art Palmon the week before classes begin or the week of Fall Quarter finals for Winter quarter classes.
