Required Assignment Sequence
PWR 2 (4 units): Focus on Research-Based Argument
Students in PWR 2 continue to focus on research-based writing, though
the focus of research will broaden to include field-based research as
well as library and Web research. In PWR 2, moreover, students will begin
to move beyond traditional academic forms of argument, making rhetorical
choices about genre, diction, style, and media that are appropriate to
the goals of their research and to the audiences they wish to address.
Finally, PWR 2 will focus on delivery, the 5th canon of rhetoric, and
thus on the written, oral, and multimedia presentation of research.
The assignment sequence below aims to provide you with the structure
within which to engage students in serious research and argument. As with
the generalized assignment sequence for PWR 1, the sequence below provides
a model that you can follow. You may also want to incorporate several
of the assignments from the PWR 1 series, although your PWR 2 course must
culminate in a research-based argument. The assignment sequence below
should provide the basis for all PWR 2 syllabi. You can see this material
on the PWR “Syllabi”
page. To see a variety of model assignments, follow the “Assignments”
link from the "Teaching
Resources" page.
