Creating a web folder on the Leland server and setting
up file-sharing permissions
ASF is a file-sharing system that allows "client" stations
to access a "host" server. In order for your web pages
to been seen by the world, you have to set up a folder in your "home
directory" on the Leland server that allows "clients" to
"visit" that folder and see its files. Once you have set
up a folder with file-sharing permissions, you can transfer files (web
pages in this case) to this folder and anyone can access them via the
internet.
Your home directory, established when you receive a SUNet account (email)
is of the form:
/afs/ir/users/y/o/yourSUNetname
The last three parts of this label /y/o/yourSUNetname, are relative
to your SUNet ID. For example, if Virginia Woolf has an email address
of the form vwoolf@stanford.edu, then her home directory would be: /asf/ir/users/v/w/vwoolf.
Likewise, if Oscar Wilde has an email of the form oscarw@stanford.edu,
then his home directory would be: /asf/ir/users/o/s/oscarw. Notice
that the directory address is contingent upon the first two letters of
the SUNet ID, not upon the name of the account's owner.
To activate your Leland space: open Samson for Windows (PC) or MacSamson
(Mac) login to "Cardinal" or "Elaine". Login
using your SUNet ID and password.
You should then get the following screen:

Setting up File Sharing Permissions
At the prompt (>) follow these steps (published by the Sweet Hall
Consulting Group at: http://www.stanford.edu/leland/howto.leland.shtml)
Type:
cd /afs/ir/users/y/o/yourSUNetname
Hit "Enter" and type:
mkdir WWW
Hit "Enter." This creates a web folder.
For anyone on the web to see your pages type:
